We want to share our recent experience flying from Toronto, Canada to Cancun, Mexico in the hopes that it helps others preparing for the same adventure. As semi-retired snowbirds with a 9-year-old, 60 lb. potcake, this was our first time flying our dog internationally, so we did extensive research and planning to ensure her safety and comfort.
Planning and Preparation
Our trip planning began about a year ago. We chose Air Canada for several reasons: they offer direct flights, have dedicated staff for pet transport, and are highly rated for flying dogs. We spoke with several airline representatives, including a knowledgeable staff member named Godwin, who reassured us and answered all our questions.
Since our dog weighs over 20 lbs, she had to fly in the baggage hold, which involved specific restrictions on travel dates and aircraft type. The earliest booking was January 5, 2025, due to holiday blackouts. The flight had to be on a larger 700 series plane, as it maintains cabin temperature control—crucial for her safety. We booked early since there's a limit of six dogs per flight.
Getting Her Ready
Preparation was key. We trained her to be comfortable in a varicrate and checked all size and weight restrictions outlined by Air Canada. To keep her safe, we attached an AirTag to her collar and crate as an extra precaution.
To help her stay hydrated during the long journey, we trained her to drink from a guinea pig/rabbit slow water dispenser. We also prepared a document with her photo and info in both English and Spanish, attaching it to the crate and giving copies to the staff during check-in. Our contact details and her info were also shared with the airline staff, who later confirmed she was on board.
Day of Travel
On the day of departure, we received a text informing us that our flight was delayed by 2.5 hours. Luckily, we were staying at an airport hotel, so we could wait comfortably instead of at the terminal. We also ensured the hotel shuttle could transport her large crate to the airport safely.
At the airport, given the cold (-14°C), we brought her inside the terminal even though signs indicate dogs should be in carriers outside. We observed others doing the same. In hindsight, waiting longer before placing her in the crate might have been better, as she ended up spending over six hours in her crate due to subsequent delays.
Check-In and Departure
During check-in, we provided detailed information about her weight, size, and health. The agent inspected her and gave us the go-ahead to proceed to the oversized baggage area. There, another staff member informed us we needed a destination baggage sticker with a barcode — which we obtained after returning to check-in. Throughout, all staff were kind, professional, and understanding.
We received a reassuring update— a photo and status — from a staff member shortly after our dog was loaded onto the plane.
Arrival in Cancun
Arriving in Cancun was a different story. Our dog was sitting alone in her crate at the oversized baggage area, with no staff around. We found scissors, carefully cut the tie wraps, and let her out. She appeared relaxed, thanks in part to her Trazodone for anxiety.
After collecting our checked baggage, we visited an area where they thoroughly checked all our documents, including her health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination. They also checked her safely in her crate, sprayed it with a disinfectant (we took her out for this), and unfortunately confiscated her dog bed and pad (we were informed this was for pest control). Once all was cleared, we were free to go.
Lessons Learned and Future Plans
Here are some things we’d do differently next time:
>Spend more time crate training to ease anxiety.
>Arrive closer to departure time if possible to minimize time in the crate.
>Travel with fewer carry-on items to avoid awkwardness.
>Use a simple, inexpensive dog bed or pad, like a bathroom mat.
>Book seats closer to the front of the plane for quicker disembarkation.
Final Thoughts
Overall, despite the delays and stresses, our experience flying with our dog was positive and manageable. We’re confident in doing it again and hope that sharing our story offers helpful tips for fellow pet travellers. Safe journeys to all!
